though it is an entry-level career, it is an easygoing job. In this article, I
intend to take a close look at the history of the career with a view to help
those wishing to study phlebotomy.
Phlebotomy Training has a history of real stories of
passion, ignorance and real experience of patients who were put to peril as
improper administration of this quackery. One may not believe that in olden days
some patients were allowed to bleed by sticking a person with a sharp
implement. Now we know that such a practice can lead to death. But in those,
there was a belief that it was the only way for healing a patient.
It is a
fact that bloodletting was in practice from the days of Hippocrates during the
fifth century BC. Romans, Egyptians, Greeks etc. have believed that blood is
means for ridding evil spirits from body. As the wound on the body becomes more
evil, the quantity of blood to be exorcised increased accordingly.
In the
olden days, there was neither Phlebotomy
Training nor any other facility of getting training online. There wasa
belief that the body was in balance with some fluids namely phlegm, blood,
black bile and yellow bile.
As there
was, nothing like Phlebotomy
training online, this belief
continued for long time. When a person becomes ill one or more of the fluids
mentioned above is believe to be thrown out due to some sort of imbalance. For
example, blood may be coming out through sinuses, rectum etc., and yellow bile
through mouth and so on. This made the common belief of expulsion of excess
fluid is the result of imbalance caused as a result of the disease. In those
days as there were doctors preferred to bleed the body and get the disease
cured, rather than to weight for the body to cure itself.
It is
understood that in those days those who acted as phlebotomists were either
surgeon or barbers who had not undergone any Phlebotomy Training. The red
and white poles advertising seen regarding barbershop is a clear indication and
indirect reference to the olden day practice of barbers acting as
phlebotomists. Red stands for blood and white stands for tourniquet.
